2019-2020 Tiger Takedown #9 Aztec Wrestling Newsletter 1/27/2020
Aztec Wrestling made history once again, with 4 days of wrestling held at Lillywhite Gymnasium. On Thursday, both Varsity and JV dualed against Kirtland. A community youth dual was held, as well. Aztec came away with two wins: the Varsity beat KC 62-26 and JV won 51-24. Then on Friday, our 2nd Annual Aztec Girls Invitational was won by Aztec. On Saturday, our 38th Annual Tiger Duals and 5th Annual JV Pool Play Tournaments were held. Aztec came away with two Championships. On Saturday evening, and all day Sunday, the New Mexico Junior Wrestling State Qualifier was held in Aztec. A lot of wrestling was held for those who love a sport that pushes your limits.
The Saturday final between unbeaten and always tough Pagosa Springs, against unbeaten Aztec, was well worth the price of admission. The two battled to a 1 team point difference. With one match left, Aztec’s Sammy Minton beat Pagosa’s EJ Monterosso with a 10-9 score, giving us a 31-27 win and the tournament Championship.
