Aztec Takedown Scholarship Foundation

Aztec High School Wrestling was started in 1956 by the legendary Football Coach, Fred Cook, as his off season football program. Coach Cook understood just how wrestling could, and did, develop his football players during the winter months. Aztec won its first wrestling State Championship in 1963, and although Coach Cook was stricken by a heart attack it inspired his athletes, resulting in 4 Aztec individual State Champs leading the way that year. Aztec's first individual State Champ was Jerry Parker who won his first title in 1959 and again in 1960. After graduating from high school, Coach Parker returned in 1965 and took over the program.  Aztec won its second state title in 1971 while under Coach Parker. He turned over the reins to one of his ex-athletes, Coach Herb Stinson, in 1978. Coach Stinson went on to win the next 12 State titles. One in 1982 and then from 1990 through 2000; an unprecedented 11 straight State Championships. In 2000, Coach Stinson retired, turning over control to his assistant coach, Rodney Romero, who won the State Duals and State Championship in 2002. Coach Romero left Aztec in 2002. In 2003 Bryan Sanders took over and had a 3rd place individual team placing and a 2nd place duals State Team. In 2006 to the present day Monte Maxwell took over . Coach Maxwell has taken them to a 2nd place finish in 2011.  The team has earned a 3rd place finish in 2017 and a Championship in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021.  A Girls Team was established in 2018 and placed 2nd in 2020 and 3rd in 2021. Coach Stinson, while back with the program for the past 10 years, officially took on the Head Coach title again for the  2021-22 season where the boys won a 5th consecutive State Championship and the girls, with only 3 state qualifiers, took home a State Runner Up trophy.
