Tiger Takedown #13 2019-20

2019-2020 Tiger Takedown #13 Aztec Wrestling Newsletter 2/24/20 post season

A historic season was unveiled at the Rio Rancho Star Center, during the New Mexico State Wrestling Championships.

A perfect finals for both the Aztec boys and girls, as Aztec Wrestling went 9 for 9 and came home with 9 new individual State Champions, 6 for the boys and 3 for the girls. This brings our total boys state champions to 117 and our girls to 4. The boys brought home the 19th team State Championship and the girls brought home our very first Runner-up girls’ trophy, on the maiden season for them. The boys were hard pushed by Los Lunas on their last season in 4-A, as Los Lunas will be bumped up to 5-A next year. Every member of the team contributed important points to winning this State Championship. It was truly a team effort.

There were many stories inside the main headline: Aztec Wrestling had its second 8th grade State Champion crowned, with a perfect 39-0 season. Our 120# wrestled the last part of the season with a shoulder that would dislocated at any given time and did so during the quarterfinals and had to injury forfeit that match. He was re-taped and was able to put together three extremely courageous matches to battle back into medal placing. This included a win over a Los Lunas wrestler to help seal the team win before we pulled him from the lineup. Aztec Wrestling also had its first ever brother and sister State Champions. Our 138# wrestler had had knee surgery on November 27th and wasn’t cleared to wrestle again until January 15th but went on to win a State Championship. Wrestlers who were willing to wrestle up weight classes, so that a complete team line up was available for the District Duals and State Qualifier Championships. Injuries were rampant at times and adjustments were made to make up holes for a 15-0 undefeated dual season. Never once did our young men and young ladies lose sight of the big picture, as they pressed on to win the ultimate goal.
