Aztec Wrestling Nation Newsletter #5

Aztec Wrestling Nation Newsletter #5 2021 5/10/2021

Aztec Wrestling suffered one of the worst weeks of dueling that I as a coach, who has been with Aztec for

33 years, can remember. Again, injuries and contact tracing played a big part in our demise for this week.

Giving up 36 points made it almost impossible uphill battles. On Thursday night at home, Rio Rancho

smelled the blood in the water and went after us; we lost 70-3. That was followed by a rare defeat by

Bloomfield by a score of 43-36. On Friday, things didn’t go much better in Albuquerque, losing to Las

Alamos 42-23. We did manage to pull off a win over Espanola, 42-36. The good thing is we will regroup this

week for our 39th Tiger Duals. Our girls once again proved they are some of the best in the State, going 6-0

over the two days.

This year’s Tiger Duals will be smaller and held at the football field, along with our 3rd annual Lady Tigers

Scramble. The reason for it being held on the football field is more spectators will be allowed and the open

air will give us more flexibility. Five teams will battle for the Tiger Duals Championship. The field will be

made up of Aztec, Bloomfield, Farmington, Kirtland, and Piedra Vista. The Lady Tiger Scramble will feature

some of the toughest lady wrestlers in the state. The Tiger Duals title will be up for grabs, but much more

important will be the District 1-4A Championship. A win over Bloomfield and Kirtland, with prior wins over

Miyamura, Gallup and Shiprock, will give the title to us once again.

This will end the COVID adjusted regular season, leaving the State Qualifier and State Championship in the

next two weeks.
